Rathalos is weak to Dragon and Thunder and Water. Break the head first and bring a Long Sword if you want the cleanest first clear. The face of the hunt, and still a wall.
Field notes
Rathalos overview
Rathalos is the fight that teaches aerial denial. It spends long stretches above the ground, punishes greedy hunters with a fireball, and uses poison claws on the dive. The important shift is to stop treating every airborne pass as a damage opportunity and start treating the landing as the real opening.
Dragon is the best general element, with Thunder and Water as usable alternatives. Breaking a wing is the tactical priority: it shortens the aerial phase and makes the head reachable for longer. The tail is severable and removes a wide poison sweep.

Breakable parts & materials
The recommended break order is: 1. Head, 2. Left wing, 3. Right wing, 4. Tail. This is the safest sequence for a typical first hunt. If your armor or weapon recipe needs a specific part, target that break and leave the rest for a later run.

Hunt plan
How to beat Rathalos
Break a wing to control the sky
The wings are the fight's pace. Ranged weapons can break them during flight; melee users should punish the low landing and then rotate to the nearest wing. Once a wing breaks, Rathalos spends less time airborne.
Learn the fireball wind-up
A fireball starts with a sharp head lift and a short charge. Move perpendicular, not away. If you are under the head, roll toward the chest to get out of the follow-up bite. A shield can guard the projectile but still loses tempo.
Cut the tail to remove the poison sweep
The tail is a poison delivery tool and a wide sweep. Sever it after a landing or a flash opening. If you only need a clear, the tail cut is optional, but it makes the second half much safer.
Radiant Rathalos adds near-molten pressure
Radiant Rathalos breathes near-molten flame and adds a stronger aerial pattern. The wing-break plan still works, but the landing windows are shorter. Bring Fire Resistance and prioritize a single wing over tail damage.
Radiantite watch
Radiant form & variant notes
Radiant Rathalos is a confirmed transformed hunt. Radiant Rathalos is the flagship's transformed state: a dragon that breathes near-molten flame and treats the arena as its domain. Break a wing early, respect the extended fire cones and only commit to the head after a verified landing.
Radiant rule
Carry the base weakness but plan for the new hazard. A safe clear with slightly lower damage is better than a perfect elemental build that spends half the fight healing. Read the Radiant species guide.
Preparation
Rathalos checklist
- Dragon is the best overall element; Thunder and Water also work.
- Break one wing early to shorten the aerial phases.
- Move sideways against the fireball, not straight back.
- Tail sever removes a poison sweep; do it after a landing.
First-clear rule
Pick one break, one element and one safe punish. Do not try to optimize the entire hunt before you have survived it once.
