Start with Great Jagras, Kulu-Ya-Ku and Barroth. Add Pukei-Pukei, Jyuratodus and Tobi-Kadachi as weapon practice. Move into Anjanath, Paolumu and Legiana, then Rathian, Rathalos and Odogaron. Treat Diablos, Black Diablos, Kushala Daora, Nergigante and Ruger Aidal as endgame checks.
Field note
Recommended monster order
This order is based on mechanical complexity and material progression rather than a strict story sequence. The game may present hunts in a different order; use this as a learning path if you can choose your next target.
| Stage | Monsters | What you learn |
|---|---|---|
| Tutorial | Great Jagras | Positioning, part breaks, weapon rhythm |
| Early | Kulu-Ya-Ku, Barroth | Forced drops, mud armor, blunt breaks |
| Early plus | Pukei-Pukei, Jyuratodus, Tobi-Kadachi | Status, mud trails, vertical pursuit |
| Mid | Anjanath, Paolumu, Great Girros | Fire cones, aerial pressure, pack control |
| Mid plus | Legiana, Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, Radobaan | Flight control, flash avoidance, armor breaks |
| High | Rathian, Rathalos, Odogaron, Pink Rathian | Poison tails, aerial punishes, fast combos |
| Endgame | Diablos, Black Diablos, Kushala Daora, Nergigante | Burrows, wind, spike management, raw pressure |
| Flagship | Ruger Aidal | Plate breaks, projectile patterns, endgame execution |
Field note
Gear checks between stages
After Great Jagras, build one functional starter set. Before Anjanath, have a Water or Thunder weapon and a real healing plan. Before Legiana, add a Thunder or Fire option. Before Diablos, bring a shield or ranged plan and learn the burrow tell. Before Ruger Aidal, make sure your armor and weapon are both intentionally chosen rather than story leftovers.
- One weapon upgrade every two or three story hunts.
- One armor set at the first real wall, not five.
- One elemental backup before the High Rank monsters.
- One defensive answer for endgame projectile and burrow fights.
Field note
Optional hunts worth doing
Do not skip every optional hunt. Targeted runs for a Plate, Wing, Tail or specific monster part are how you unlock the next weapon. Pick nurties that support the main build, then move back to the story.
The monster database contains material lists and break priorities. Use it to plan a focused run instead of repeating a monster and hoping.
Field note
Preparing for the endgame
The endgame is less about one perfect build and more about having answers. A single raw set will struggle across elemental hazards, while a player with one complete main build and a defensive backup can clear more content without burning resources.
Ruger Aidal is the headline endgame hunt. Do not walk in with an unupgraded armor set just because the story has reached the credits. Prepare a shield or ranged weapon, break a golden plate and learn the projectile sequence before expecting a clean first clear.
