For a first main, Bow and Long Sword offer the best mix of safety, damage and flexibility. Lance is the best defensive pick. Great Sword and Hammer have higher ceilings but demand more matchup knowledge. Charge Blade remains the hardest to learn.

The pre-launch tier list
This is not a final balance ranking. It is a launch-planning list built around three questions: how easy is the weapon to learn, how well does it cover the roster, and how much does it depend on perfect matchup knowledge?
| Tier | Weapon | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| S | Bow | Mobile, safe, strong elemental access and excellent for wings and heads. |
| S | Long Sword | Long reach, counter play and a forgiving all-round melee loop. |
| A | Lance | The best defensive first-clear weapon. Lower damage ceiling if you turtle. |
| A | Dual Blades | Great mobility and elemental pressure; stamina and positioning hold it back. |
| A | Heavy Bowgun | Strong ranged part damage, but asymmetric setup and movement. |
| B | Great Sword | Enormous burst and part damage, but the highest timing burden. |
| B | Hammer | Essential for blunt breaks and stuns, weaker when the head is unreachable. |
| B | Charge Blade | Excellent kit ceiling, but too many states for a first-hour main. |

Best weapons for a first main
Choose Bow if you want to see the whole fight and learn part targeting safely. Choose Long Sword if you want a melee weapon that teaches spacing without feeling sluggish. Choose Lance if you are worried about dying more than clearing slowly.
Do not choose a weapon only because it sits in the S tier. A B-tier weapon in your hands will outperform an S-tier weapon you resent using. The full weapon database explains each moveset, combo and skills.

Best weapons for co-op
Lance, Bow and Heavy Bowgun bring the most reliable team value because they can control space and target hard-to-reach parts. Hammer is the best blunt option for stunning a head and enabling the squad's biggest window.
A four-player team does not need four duplicated damage builds. A shield player, a ranged elemental player and two flexible melee hunters cover almost every launch fight.

Matchup tips by weapon family
Ranged weapons have the advantage against flying monsters and targets with exposed wings. Shield weapons excel against Diablos, Black Diablos and Ruger Aidal's projectile patterns. Fast melee weapons farm tails and legs, while blunt weapons turn armored heads into material.
- Bow: Kushala Daora, Rathalos, Diablos
- Lance: Diablos, Black Diablos, Ruger Aidal
- Hammer: Barroth, Rathian, Nergigante
- Dual Blades: Great Jagras, Kulu-Ya-Ku, Odogaron
- Heavy Bowgun: Paolumu, Kushala Daora, Legiana

Will this list change after launch?
Yes. Launch balance, decoration availability and live-service additions can move any weapon several places. We will update this page after the October 29 launch and separate confirmed live rankings from pre-launch theory. Treat the current list as a starting point, not a verdict.
