Monster Hunter Outlanders Armor

Armor should answer a problem, not just raise a number. Compare set directions, material costs and weapon pairings before you spend a rare plate.

16 set guides Low → endgame Set skills tracked

Forge smart

A full set is not automatically the best set.

Armor in Outlanders follows the Monster Hunter pattern: monster materials in, defense and skills out. Set skills can add extra levels to skills already active on your equipment, which makes mixed sets genuinely useful. Your weapon should decide the set, not the other way around.

Start with one of our armor and skills guide routes, then use this database to compare material costs. If a set and your next weapon both need the same plate, decide which one unlocks more hunts first.

Build rules

How to choose an armor set

1. Start with the weapon

Fire weapon? Rathalos is a natural target. Ice? Legiana. Raw shield? Barroth and Diablos deserve a look. Element and playstyle decide the set.

2. Add one comfort skill

Guard, Evade Window, Constitution or Focus can change a weapon's feel more than a small damage increase. Choose the one that solves your actual problem.

3. Check the shared material

If the next weapon upgrade and the armor piece need the same Plate or Gem, solve the weapon first. It generally unlocks more hunts.

Smithy FAQ

Armor questions, answered

How does armor work in Monster Hunter Outlanders?
Armor is crafted from monster materials and provides defense, elemental resistance and skills. Wearing pieces from the same set can activate a set skill that adds levels to skills already on your armor.
What is the best armor set for beginners?
Barroth is a strong early defensive set, while Rathian is a comfortable all-round high-rank transition. Do not over-upgrade low-rank pieces; save materials for your first real weapon upgrade.
Do I need a full five-piece set?
Not always. Mixed sets often provide the skills you need with more flexibility. Check whether the set skill actually benefits your weapon before sacrificing good off-set pieces.
Which armor should I craft first?
Build one set that matches your main weapon's element or role. Rathalos is a natural Fire choice; Legiana supports Ice; Nergigante is a long-term raw target. Read the armor guide for a full build order.
